December Birthday Ideas Wheel – What to Do for a December Birthday

About this December birthday ideas

A December birthday shares the month with the holidays, so the challenge is to make the day feel like its own. The ideas on the wheel are festive without being gift-wrapped copies of Christmas: a light walking tour, an ugly-sweater bowling party, a gingerbread house contest, ice skating, a ski lodge weekend and a white elephant karaoke gala. Spin for December birthday ideas until one feels right, then make it yours.

How to use the December birthday ideas

  1. 1

Spin, then pick a date early in the month or the weekend before Christmas, before travel plans take over.

  2. 2

Make clear that this is the birthday celebration, separate from holiday gifts, so the guest of honor does not get a combined present.

  3. 3

Book restaurants, rinks and lodges at least a month ahead, because December is the busiest month for group events.

Ways to use this wheel

  • Birthday, not Christmas: choose a color scheme such as silver and blue and avoid red and green decorations.
  • Half-birthday option: some people with December birthdays celebrate again in June, and the wheel works for that too.

Giving a December birthday its own moment

December birthdays can be overshadowed by the holidays. Make the day separate with something that is clearly for the birthday person: a holiday light walking tour, an ugly-sweater bowling party, a gingerbread house contest or ice skating at the city center. Spin to choose.

The birthstones for December are turquoise, tanzanite and zircon, and the flowers are the narcissus and holly. A blue-and-silver theme avoids looking like the holiday decorations.

Avoiding the double-gift problem

December birthdays are Sagittarius until about the 21st and Capricorn after that. Remind friends and family that gifts for the birthday and for the holiday are separate. Send invitations early, because December calendars fill up quickly.
