Where an NFL team wheel comes in handy

Thirty-two franchises is a lot of choices, and most people default to the same few teams. The wheel gives every club, from perennial contenders to rebuilding squads, exactly the same chance, which makes it a good tool for Madden franchise modes, rebuild challenges and "play with whoever comes up" nights.

For a Madden challenge, spin once to pick your team and once more for a rival. Add a house rule such as no trading in the first season. For fantasy or pick’em groups, spin to assign each person a team to follow for the year.

Narrowing it down

The league is split into two conferences and eight divisions. If you only want AFC or NFC teams, or one division, delete the other teams in the entries panel before you spin. Turn on Remove winner after each spin to draw a full schedule of opponents with no repeats.

Is every team equally likely? Yes. Unless you change weights, each of the 32 teams has a 1 in 32 chance, about 3.1%, on every spin. Can the same team come up twice? Yes, because each spin is independent. If you want to avoid repeats, turn on Remove winner after each spin.

Can I add a team that moved or was renamed? Type it into the entries panel and delete the old name. Your changes stay in your browser, and you can save the wheel under My wheels or share it with a link.

How the league is organized, and how to use that on the wheel

The NFL has 32 teams in two conferences, the AFC and the NFC, and each conference has four divisions of four teams: East, North, South and West. If you want a pick from one conference or division, delete the other teams before you spin. For example, remove all NFC teams to keep a 16-team AFC wheel.

Because every team has the same chance, each team has a 1 in 32 chance, or about 3.1%, on each spin. A division of four has a 12.5% chance of being represented in any single spin.

Using the wheel for football video games

In Madden franchise mode, a random team is a good way to start a rebuild. Spin once for your team and once for a rival. Set a goal such as reaching the playoffs within three seasons. For head-to-head games with friends, spin once per player and play a short season or a one-off match.

To avoid a mismatch, use handicap rules such as allowing the weaker team an extra timeout or a pick of one free player upgrade.

Fantasy leagues and friendly challenges
