How to use the chore wheel

  1. 1

Spin every Sunday morning or chore day.

  2. 2

Each roommate spins once to receive their designated area of responsibility.

Ways to use this wheel

  • Sunday Deep Clean Draw: Turn 1 hour of weekly house cleaning into a gamified sprint.
  • Roommate Agreement: Include the Chore Wheel as the official dispute resolution tool in your lease.

Chores handed out fairly

Arguments about housework are usually about fairness, not effort. A wheel assigns the jobs by chance, so nobody can say you picked on them. Add the tasks and spin once for each person.

Turn on Remove winner after each spin so each chore is assigned once. Post the result on the fridge or share it as a link for the week.

Balancing the load

Not all chores are equal. Mix hard and easy jobs on the same wheel, or give heavier tasks lower weights so they come up less often. Roommates can rotate weekly, and families can match chores to ages. Save the wheel under My wheels to reuse every week.

Keeping it fair over the long run

A single spin can feel unlucky, so rotate the wheel weekly and keep a log. Give heavier jobs a higher point value and make sure each person ends up with a similar total. For children, match tasks to age: setting the table for young ones, trash for older ones.

Put the result where everyone can see it, and agree on what done means for each job.

Fair chores start with a clear list

Before spinning, write down every recurring job in your home: dishes, trash, bathroom, floors, laundry, pet care, shopping. Estimate how long each takes and how much people dislike it. Then decide how many jobs each person does per week. The wheel works best when the list is complete and the load is roughly even.

Enter the jobs as separate entries. If one job is much bigger than the others, split it into parts or give it a note such as "30 minutes."

Running the weekly spin

Pick a fixed time, like Sunday evening. Each person spins in turn. Turn on Remove winner after each spin so each job is taken once, and keep going until the list is empty. Write the results on a shared board or share the wheel link in your group chat. At the end of the week, check what was done and discuss any problems.

Rotating weekly gives everyone a turn at the unpopular jobs, and nobody is stuck with the bathroom for a year.

Making it work for families with children

Match jobs to age: setting the table for a young child, feeding pets for a slightly older one, taking out the trash for a teenager. Pair the wheel with a simple reward chart. Praise effort and finish chores together at first. Let children spin themselves, because they accept results more easily when the choice is random.

Roommates and shared houses

Agree on the standard for each chore. Decide what happens when someone skips: a swap, a make-up job or a small penalty. Use weights if one person has a heavier schedule. Review the list every few months and update it when household needs change.
