About this 4 times table wheel
Spin this 4 times table wheel and it lands on one fact from the table, from 4 × 1 to 4 × 12. The answer stays hidden until someone presses Reveal, so students say their answer first and the whole class checks it together. Four legs on a chair, four wheels on a car, four seasons in a year: ask how many legs 9 chairs have before revealing 4 × 9.

- Double, then double again: The spinner says the first double and the next student finishes it ("7 doubled is 14..." "...and 14 doubled is 28"). Two students solve every fact together, and nobody is left guessing alone.
- Exit ticket: Spin three facts at the end of the lesson and collect the answers on sticky notes at the door.
- Beat the wheel: Students get a point for every correct answer before the reveal; the wheel gets a point for every miss.
Tricks for the 4 times table
Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice. For 4 × 7, double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28. Students who are confident with doubles can do the whole table this way, and it builds mental arithmetic at the same time.
All answers are even, and their last digits repeat every five facts: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 end in 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, and 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 follow the same pattern.
The 4s facts that trip students up
Watch 4 × 7 = 28 and 4 × 8 = 32, which students often swap with 24. Saying "double, double" out loud before answering cuts those mix-ups.

What is 4 × 7?
4 × 7 = 28. Double 7 is 14, and double 14 is 28.
How do you multiply by 4 quickly?
Double the number, then double it again. For 4 × 6: double 6 is 12, double 12 is 24.
What is 4 × 12?
4 × 12 = 48. Double 12 is 24, and double 24 is 48.
