How to use the multiplication wheel

  1. 1

Spin the wheel during morning math warmups or transition periods.

  2. 2

Students write their answers on individual mini-whiteboards and hold them up simultaneously.

Ways to use this wheel

  • Whiteboard Math Sprint: First student to display the correct product scores a team point.
  • Around the World Game: Move from desk to desk answering each spun multiplication problem.

Practice the hard facts

Most students learn the easy times tables quickly. The ones that cause trouble, like 6 × 7, 7 × 8 and 9 × 6, need more repetition. This wheel focuses on those, so each spin practices a fact that matters.

Use it as a warm-up: students write the answer on a mini whiteboard and show it at once. Call on different students for each spin to keep everyone alert.

Building fluency over time

Keep practice short and low-pressure, five minutes at a time. Track which facts students miss and add them to a custom wheel. Change the entries to match the facts your class is learning, and save wheels for each times table in My wheels.

Making practice stick

Short, frequent sessions work better than long ones. Aim for five minutes a day, with spins in pairs: one student spins, the other answers, then they switch. Celebrate accuracy first and speed later.

Track the facts that cause errors, and add them to a custom wheel so practice stays focused where it is needed.

It opens with 12 entries: 7 × 8 = ?, 6 × 7 = ?, 9 × 6 = ?, 8 × 8 = ?, 12 × 11 = ? and 7 more. Everything on it is editable, so you can swap in your own list in a few seconds.

What can I use this wheel for?

People use it in a classroom, a tutoring session or a homework routine. Popular ideas include Whiteboard Math Sprint and Around the World Game. For example, Whiteboard Math Sprint: first student to display the correct product scores a team point.

Is this wheel really random?

Yes. Nothing about it is rigged: the winner is chosen by your browser's secure random number generator, so a list of 12 gives each entry a 8.33% chance until you change the weights. How our randomness works has the full explanation.

Can I stop the same result coming up twice?

Yes. Switch on Remove winner after each spin and every entry that comes up leaves the wheel. With 12 entries you can draw up to 12 different results in a row, then reset the list to start over.

Can I share or embed this wheel?

Yes. The Share button gives you a link with your edited list built in, so anyone who opens it sees the same wheel. The Embed button gives you code to place it on your own page.
