Using a wheel for Secret Santa
A wheel is a fun way to reveal who gets whom in front of the group, but a wheel alone cannot guarantee that nobody draws themselves. For a proper gift exchange with exclusions, use the Secret Santa generator, which matches everyone at once so no one is paired with themselves or with a partner you exclude.
Use this wheel for the lighter jobs around the exchange: deciding who opens a gift first, picking the order of reveals, or choosing a game for the party. Add the names of your group, spin, and use Remove winner after each spin to run through everyone without repeats.
Keeping the exchange fair and private
Agree on a budget before names are drawn, and set a date for the exchange. If you are matching people remotely, the generator can show each person only their own match so the surprise stays intact. Names you type stay in your browser, and a share link carries them in the part of the address that is never sent to a server.
Why a plain wheel cannot run a Secret Santa on its own
In a Secret Santa, every person must give to one person and receive from one person, and nobody can draw themselves. If you simply let each person draw a name at random, the chance that nobody draws their own name is about 37%, whatever the group size. That means about 63% of random draws fail somewhere. A good generator therefore assigns everyone at once and checks the result.
That is why this page uses the wheel for the fun parts of the exchange, and the Secret Santa generator for the matching itself.
What the wheel is good for at a gift exchange
Use it to decide who opens first, to pick the order for a white elephant steal, to choose a party game or to assign small jobs such as bringing snacks or playing music. Add the guests’ names and spin. Turn on Remove winner after each spin so everyone gets a place in the order.
For a live reveal at a party, the wheel adds drama: the person chosen opens the next gift, then the wheel picks the next.
Setting the rules before you start
Agree on a budget, a date and a deadline for wrapping. Decide whether gifts are anonymous or revealed. Ask for a short wish list so nobody has to guess. Allow guests to exclude themselves from pairings with a partner, since people who live together usually prefer to give to someone else. The generator supports exclusions for exactly this.
Send the matching privately, and keep a note of who has whom in case a guest cannot attend.
Remote and office exchanges
For remote teams, the generator can create private reveal links, so each person sees only their own match. Set a budget in the local currency, and agree on a shipping deadline well before the date. For offices, mention allergies and the cost of shipping to colleagues in different countries.

Frequently asked questions
How do I prevent someone from drawing their own name?
Use our full-featured Secret Santa Generator (/secret-santa-generator) which automatically prevents self-matches and handles couple exclusions.
Can I keep assignments secret from the organizer?
Yes, our dedicated Secret Santa tool creates encrypted individual reveal links for each participant.
Can this wheel stop people drawing themselves?
Not by itself. Use the Secret Santa generator for matching. It guarantees nobody gets their own name and respects your exclusions.
Does the generator keep my list?
Names stay in your browser, and private reveal links hold the match inside the address so we never see it.
What budget should we choose?
Pick a number everyone is comfortable with. Common ranges are 15 to 30 in your local currency for friends and colleagues.
How do I handle someone dropping out?
Redo the matching with the remaining people, and tell everyone that the matches changed.
