Academic words that appear everywhere
Words like analyze, evaluate and hypothesize show up on tests and in every subject. Students who know them understand questions better. The wheel presents them with short definitions, so each spin is a mini-lesson.
Ask students to use the word in a sentence about the current topic, or to give a synonym. For writing, challenge them to use the word in a paragraph by the end of the day.
Making vocabulary stick
Review the same words several times over a week. Add words from your current unit, and remove those students already know. Keep the list to eight to ten words so each one comes up often enough to be remembered.
