New here? See how the wheel works: entries, odds, winners, sound and sharing.

The hat, without the paper

No scraps of paper, no pens and no folded slips: put the names on the wheel and spin. Everyone can see the names and watch the draw, which removes doubt about who was picked.

It suits gift exchanges, team picks and any draw where fairness matters. The winner is chosen by a secure random generator before the wheel starts to turn.

For several draws

Use Remove winner after each spin to draw names one at a time. For a gift exchange where no one can pick themselves, use the Secret Santa generator instead, which checks that nobody draws their own name.

The hat method, and its problems

Drawing names from a hat is a classic. It works for small groups, but paper slips can be folded unevenly, drawn unfairly, lost or disputed. In large groups, passing the hat takes time. A wheel keeps the spirit of the draw while making it fast, visible and recorded.

Add every name once. If someone should have more chances, raise their weight.

Common uses

Assign gift recipients, choose presenters, pick door-prize winners, form teams, set a speaking order, choose a volunteer. Teachers use it for random reading turns. Clubs use it for officer elections when candidates tie. Families use it to decide who picks the movie. In each case, a visible draw earns trust.

Doing several draws

Turn on Remove winner after each spin to draw names one at a time without repeats. The order they leave the wheel is your sequence. For a team draw, spin for each team slot. For a gift exchange where nobody can draw themselves, use the Secret Santa generator.

Keeping it fair

Show the list before you spin. Do not change the list after it starts. Spin once per draw and accept the result. If someone leaves, remove them before the next spin. Record the draw if people need proof.
