A fair way to pick one name from a list
Paste your names into the entries panel, one per line, and every line becomes one slice with the same chance of winning. The winner is chosen by your browser’s cryptographic random number generator before the wheel starts turning, so the animation never decides the result and nobody can steer it.
This works for giveaways, picking who presents first, choosing a volunteer, or deciding who gets the last slice of cake. If someone should have a better chance, for example because they earned extra entries, raise their weight instead of typing their name several times.
Tips for bigger lists and live events
You can paste hundreds of names at once, and duplicates can be removed with one click so nobody is counted twice. For a live draw, use fullscreen so the audience can see the wheel, and use Remove winner after each spin to draw runners-up without repeats. If you need to prove the draw was fair, record your screen while you spin and share the wheel with the link, which keeps the names in the address and never sends them to a server.
How the picker chooses, step by step
When you press Spin, your browser asks the operating system for secure random numbers using the Web Crypto API. The wheel turns those into a single choice among your active entries, then animates to that result. The animation is decoration. It cannot change who was picked, and nothing about the colors, order of names or position on the wheel affects the odds.
Each name gets an equal share unless you change its weight. With 30 names, every person has a 1 in 30 chance, about 3.3%, on each spin. If you remove winners after each spin, the odds for the remaining names rise as the list shrinks.
Getting a list in quickly
Paste from a spreadsheet, a chat or an email: one name per line is enough. If your names are in a CSV file, use the import button in the toolbar. Remove duplicates with one click so nobody appears twice by accident, and use shuffle if you want the list in a random order for display. Blank lines are ignored.
Long lists are fine. For several hundred names, use fullscreen mode, because individual labels become small but the result is still announced clearly in the winner dialog.
Running a fair draw people can trust
Say out loud how many names are on the wheel and what the prize or task is. Show the list before spinning. Spin once, in front of everyone, and accept the result. If you need proof afterwards, record your screen, or share the wheel with the link so others can see the same list.
Decide in advance what happens if the winner is absent. A clear rule such as "spin again after one minute" prevents arguments.
Everyday uses beyond giveaways
Teachers use it to choose who answers next. Managers use it for who presents first, who takes notes and who brings snacks. Families use it for who chooses the movie or who does the dishes. Writers and game masters use it to pick character names. In each case, the value is the same: a decision nobody can say was rigged.
Weighted draws, explained with numbers
A weight tells the wheel how large a share an entry gets. If three people have weight 1 and one person has weight 3, the total is 6. The weighted person has a 3 in 6 chance (50%) and each of the others 1 in 6 (about 17%). Weights are useful for giveaways where people earned different numbers of entries, or for classroom draws where students who have already answered should come up less often.
Handling ties, no-shows and objections
Decide before the spin what happens if the winner is absent, declines or turns out to be ineligible. A common rule is to spin again after a short wait. Write it down where everyone can see it. If someone objects to the result, point to the rule, not to the wheel. People accept random outcomes more readily when the process was agreed in advance.
Comparing picker types
A wheel is best when people should watch the draw, such as a giveaway, a classroom or a team meeting. A plain random number generator is better when you need hundreds of winners fast. A card draw is best at a small physical gathering. A wheel adds suspense and visibility, which is why it is the most common choice when trust matters.
Privacy: where your names live
Names you type stay in your browser. They are not uploaded, and we do not store them. If you share a wheel, the list is compressed into the part of the link after the # symbol, which browsers never send to a server. Anyone who has the link can see the names, so do not post links with sensitive names in public places.

Frequently asked questions
How many names can I paste into this wheel?
WheelWhirl easily supports over 1,000 names with smooth hardware-accelerated canvas rendering.
Can I remove the winner and keep spinning?
Yes, click "Remove Winner" in the celebration dialog to remove the selected name and spin again.
Can I save my list of names for future use?
Yes, save unlimited lists to your browser’s local storage in the "My Wheels" panel.
Is my list stored anywhere?
No. Your names stay in your browser. They are not sent to our servers, and share links hold the list in the part of the address that browsers never transmit.
How many names can I add?
There is no fixed limit in the wheel. Very long lists work, but labels get small, so for hundreds of names use fullscreen and rely on the winner dialog.
Can I draw several winners without repeats?
Yes. Turn on Remove winner after each spin, or open Settings and use the multiple winners option to draw a set at once.
Can I give some people better odds?
Yes. In Weights and colors, raise a person’s weight. A weight of 3 gives them three times the chance of someone with weight 1.
Can I pick a random name from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Copy the column from your spreadsheet and paste it into the entries panel.
Can I save the list for next time?
Yes. Use My wheels to save it in your browser.
What if two names are the same?
Both appear as separate slices. Add a last initial to tell them apart, or remove duplicates if one is a mistake.
